    This site has cheap Ebooks on 40s and 50s hair. You can get what I think is the definitive book of 1940s hairstyling: "Creative Hairshaping and Hairstyling You Can Do by Ivan of Hollywood" for 8 dollars here. There are also lots of vintage magazines for pocket change prices.
