3 Simple Vintage Tips on Sitting Posture You Can Do Straight Away
Considering that we spent so much time sitting down, bad sitting posture not only lack elegance, but is also bad for our health and leads to fatigue, backache and headache.
Vintage ladies had great elegant posture. What were their secrets?
I looked into a 1940s book on posture, and summarized into these 3 simple tips that you can do straight away.
1. Do not slump
A lot of us tend to lean forward over the desk. We therefore slump. The trick is not to lean forward with your shoulders and upper body. But to to "lean forward from your hips", whilst keeping the back straight.
*If you just follow one tip, do this one. It is simple to follow and your posture will be immediately better.
2. Sit Straight
This pretty much goes hand in hand with the first tip. Ideally, you should have your "head up, shoulders back, chin and abdomen in".
3. Make sure you have appropriately positioned furniture
It is no good practising perfect posture on chairs and tables that are too high/low for your body. It would definitely add unnecessary strains.
The right height for a chair should allow "your feet to rest squarely on the floor", and "your thighs supporting the full weight of your body".
The right height for the table should allow hands and forearms to rest upon it, without your shoulders hunching.
